The York County Sheriff's Office recovered a body from Lake Wylie near Ebenezer Boat Landing on Monday, Sept. 7, after a person jumped from a boat.

The sheriff's office said the person went into the water at about 7:40 p.m. and did not resurface. A body was recovered roughly an hour later, at about 8:40 p.m., WBTV reported.

The incident happened on Labor Day.

Four agencies responded to the scene: the York County Sheriff's Office, the York County Office of Emergency Management, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and the Newport Fire Department, according to WCNC.

The York County Coroner's Office and SCDNR are investigating, according to WBTV. The person's identity had not been released as of Monday night.

No details about the circumstances of the jump, the number of people aboard the boat, or whether the person was wearing a life jacket have been made public.

SCDNR notes on its website that 80 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket. The agency also states that more than half of boating fatality victims were reported as being able to swim.

As of late May, SCDNR had recorded 14 drownings and four boating deaths statewide in 2026, according to WRDW. That count predates the Sept. 7 incident and does not reflect the full summer season.

The investigation by the York County Coroner's Office and SCDNR is ongoing, with no timeline announced for the release of additional details.
