A Fort Mill animal shelter placed 482 cats and dogs into homes through late August, and two animals still waiting for families are getting the spotlight.

The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) reported the milestone in its weekly pet feature, published Aug. 31 by the Fort Mill Sun. Of the 482 placements at the Regent Parkway shelter, 374 were cats and 108 were dogs.

The shelter's latest featured animals are Perdita, a 1-year-9-month-old tuxedo cat, and Moto Moto, a senior dog estimated to be just past 10.

Perdita arrived as a stray with a litter of newborn kittens. All of the kittens have been adopted, and the shelter says it is now her turn. She lives in the big cat room, where she is known for pulling visitors closer when she wants attention. She is spayed, vaccinated, tested and microchipped.

Moto Moto was abandoned even though he had a microchip. The shelter says workers tried to reach the owner listed on the chip and never got a response. Staff gave him his current name. He completed classes at Zoom Room and was described as "a star student." He is neutered, vaccinated, tested and microchipped.

Both animals are available by appointment at 8177 Regent Parkway. Residents can call 803-802-0902 to schedule a visit.

Holiday pop-up shop

The nonprofit is also preparing its 2026 holiday pop-up shop. A sponsorship sign-up page organized by Mary Beth Knapp is live on the HSYC website, listing a location of 232 Main St. in Fort Mill. The sponsorship window runs through Dec. 31.

The shelter's Christmas Store Facebook page says it will reopen in September 2026, though no specific grand opening date has been announced.

How to help

The shelter's current supply needs are laundry detergent and bleach. Volunteer shifts are available at the shelter and at Pawsibilities, the organization's thrift store at 2144 Carolina Place in Fort Mill. Donated household goods sold through Pawsibilities fund daily operations.

Fostering is also an option. The shelter describes it as the most direct way to save an animal's life.

Adoption hours are by appointment only: Sunday, Tuesday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m., and Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. Full requirements are posted at humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org.
