Fort Mill is recruiting residents with construction and design experience to serve on its newly created Construction Board of Appeals.
The town announced the openings on its official X account Monday, Sept. 7, directing applicants to the town's Boards & Commissions page. A Facebook post from the town, dated Aug. 24, described the board's purpose in more detail.
The board will hear and decide appeals of orders, decisions and determinations made by town building and code officials, according to the town's post. Fort Mill is looking for applicants with experience as an architect, engineer, builder or contractor who can help interpret technical codes.
No deadline has been announced.
New board replaces multiple panels
Fort Mill Town Council approved the board's creation May 18 through Ordinance 2026-25, which adopts Chapter 6, Article II, Section 6-27 of the town's Code of Ordinances. The new panel consolidates what had been separate appeals boards for building, residential, plumbing, electrical and other technical codes into a single body, WRHI reported.
Assistant Town Manager Chris Pettit guided the ordinance through council and said at the time that no changes had been made since the first readings. The board is newly established and does not yet appear to have a regular meeting schedule posted.
Moratorium nears expiration
The board openings come as Fort Mill nears the end of a temporary moratorium on new residential development. Town Council adopted Ordinance 2026-19 on March 31, halting new residential rezoning, annexation and preliminary plat applications, as well as rezoning or annexation involving General Industrial or Limited Industrial districts, according to a town notice. The moratorium is set to expire Sept. 30.
The town has not publicly stated how many seats are open on the board.
