Two local Publix stores received Impact Awards from United Way of York County at its annual Power to Thrive Breakfast on Sept. 16.
The Fort Mill Gold Hill Publix and the Landing Station Publix in Lake Wylie were among four York County locations honored, according to a blog post by United Way of York County. The Cherry Road Crossing and Wedgewood Square Shopping Center stores also received the award.
United Way described Publix as one of its largest contributors and a Mission Partner. The nonprofit said the stores' year-round support strengthens its Economic and Family Support programs and helps local families access resources for greater financial stability.
Six awards were given.
The breakfast also honored several other York County organizations and individuals. VELUX America received the Spirit of York County Award, the nonprofit's highest honor, for its support of United Way's annual giving campaign and volunteer efforts. Duke Energy's Catawba Nuclear Station earned the Summit Award for what United Way called exceptional leadership and year-round support.
SouthState Bank received the Live United Award for its involvement in board service, program funding, campaign participation and volunteer support.
Lorin Hamilton, United Way of York County's longtime treasurer, received the Harvey Hawkins Volunteer of the Year Award. The award is named in memory of Harvey Hawkins, who served on the nonprofit's board of directors for more than 30 years, including as board chair.
State Rep. Tommy Pope, a Rock Hill attorney who has served in the South Carolina House since 2011, received a Thank You Award for his advocacy for the 2-1-1 Resource Line, according to United Way. Pope also serves as speaker pro tempore at Elrod Pope Law Firm, according to his South Carolina Legislature profile.
The nonprofit also recognized three outgoing board members: Kelly Coxe, a retired York educator who served six years; Nicole Flippin, senior vice president of nuclear operations in North Carolina at Duke Energy; and Frank Robards, senior vice president at Truist Bank and past board chair.
United Way of York County said it is working toward a goal of helping 3,000 local families achieve financial stability by 2030.
