Two Catawba Ridge High School juniors operated surgical robots Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Piedmont Medical Network's Robotics Symposium in Rock Hill.

Sreeya Jonnalagadda and Lily McGann joined hundreds of York and Lancaster County students at the Rock Hill Sports and Events Center, WBTV's Rachel Richardson reported. Students rotated through four surgical robots, collecting a passport stamp at each station while learning how the machines are used in operating rooms.

"I'm hoping to learn about how surgeons use technology nowadays to enhance their ability to perform surgeries especially long ones that take forever," Jonnalagadda said.

Jonnalagadda, who wants to pursue cardiothoracic surgery, said the event gave her insight into her future career. McGann said the robots help surgeons work more efficiently.

Shellie Milwood, market director for surgical services at Piedmont Medical Network, said past symposium participants have gone on to shadow in operating rooms and meet with anesthesiologists.
