Five of six Tri-County 5A/4A Player of the Week awards for Week 6 went to Fort Mill and Lake Wylie players after both teams posted convincing wins.
High school football coaches from York, Lancaster and Chester counties vote on the weekly honors, according to WRHI. Fort Mill running back Broden Mitcheson and Lake Wylie's Landon Robinson shared the Offensive Player of the Week award. Smith Stapleton of Fort Mill took Defensive Lineman of the Week, and teammate Noah Hardy earned Special Teams Player of the Week. Lake Wylie offensive lineman LJ Evans rounded out the area haul with the Offensive Lineman of the Week honor.
Northwestern High's Xavier Means won the overall Player of the Week, and Indian Land's Adam Foster was named Defensive Player of the Week.
What Mitcheson and Stapleton did
Mitcheson's award came after a three-touchdown performance in Fort Mill's 63-21 rout of Westwood, the Fort Mill Sun reported. His longest score was an 80-yard run. Through five games, Mitcheson has rushed for 609 yards and 10 touchdowns on 80 carries, averaging 121.8 yards per game.
Stapleton's Defensive Lineman honor followed a game in which he pounced on a Westwood fumble at the 14-yard line, setting up one of Mitcheson's short touchdown runs.
Stats for Hardy, Robinson and Evans were unavailable. Lake Wylie beat Lewisville 31-22 on the road.
@Broden_M11: "Another big TEAM win … 132 rushing yds & 3 TDs on 17 carries, plus a 90-yard kickoff return TD. Also blessed to pass 2K career rushing yds."
Mitcheson posted that on X on Sunday, Sept. 27, after the Westwood game.
Fort Mill at 5-0
The 63-21 win pushed Fort Mill to 5-0, its best start since 1983, according to SI High School. The Yellow Jackets climbed two spots to No. 5 in the South Carolina Class 5A media poll.
Fort Mill averages 204.0 rushing yards and 219.4 passing yards per game heading into region play.
