Fort Mill and Catawba Ridge each posted lopsided victories in the second week of York County girls flag football, with the Copperheads recording the week's only shutout.
Fort Mill defeated Northwestern 35-12 on Tuesday, Sept. 8, pulling away after an early exchange of scores. Northwestern managed just two touchdowns the rest of the way. Catawba Ridge blanked York 32-0, keeping the Bulldogs out of scoring range for the entire game, Thomas Hyslip reported for the Tega Cay Sun.
Three county games were played in Week 2. South Pointe remained unbeaten with a 41-6 win over Rock Hill, the widest margin of the three matchups. The Stallions have not lost since the schedule opened.
Fort Mill bounces back
The 35-12 win marks a turnaround for the Yellow Jackets. In the Aug. 31 season opener, Fort Mill jumped out to a 19-7 halftime lead over South Pointe before being shut out in the second half and falling 32-19. Running back Abbey S. scored on the very first play of the season for Fort Mill, but the Stallions adjusted after the break and pulled away.
Fort Mill's 35-point output against Northwestern was nearly double its 19-point total from the opener.
Catawba Ridge stays perfect
Catawba Ridge improved to 2-0 after its 32-0 blanking of York. The Copperheads gave up no points and controlled the game from start to finish.
Their opener was far tighter. On Aug. 31, Catawba Ridge edged Legion Collegiate Academy 12-7. Legion intercepted a pass with about 30 seconds left and launched a Hail Mary, but the throw fell incomplete and the Copperheads escaped.
The Week 2 shutout showed a defense that has allowed just seven points through two games.
