Chad Williams won the Democratic primary for South Carolina Senate District 15 on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Williams took 84 percent of the vote in the York County special election.

He collected 1,447 votes to Monika White's 276, according to unofficial returns from the York County Board of Voter Registration and Elections. White finished with about 16 percent of the 1,723 ballots cast.

The result puts Williams, a former York County councilman, on the general election ballot against Republican James Burns.

The seat is vacant. State Sen. Wes Climer announced in February he would resign to pursue a congressional race, FITSNews reported. Senate District 15 covers portions of York County.

Williams pivots to November

Williams posted a victory message to his campaign Facebook page after the returns came in.

"Thank you, York County, for your confidence in me in this primary election … Together, we've built incredible momentum," Williams wrote. "Now we need you to stand with us, again, in November, as we continue moving forward."

Williams has campaigned under the slogan "Let's Start Where We Agree." He has also served as chair of the Anne Springs Close Greenway Regional Board of Managers in Fort Mill, according to the Tega Cay Sun.

Republican Burns enters general election

Burns, a Rock Hill native and Citadel graduate, owns Burns Chevrolet and Burns Ford, both in Fort Mill. His campaign website, burnsforsenate.com, carries the tagline "Conservative leadership for South Carolina."
