Catawba Ridge quarterback Will Gambrill threw four touchdown passes and running back Boston Halpin scored three times as the Copperheads routed York 50-26 on Friday, Oct. 2.

The 50 points were a season high for Catawba Ridge, according to MaxPreps. The win moved the Copperheads to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 3-4A (South Carolina High School League Class 4A) heading into a crosstown showdown with Nation Ford on Friday, Oct. 9.

Gambrill completed 16 of 25 passes for more than 300 yards, according to Fort Mill Prep Sports. He spread the ball to four receivers for scores. Wide receiver Colten McCauley caught five passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Calvin Rocheleau added four catches for 116 yards. Nate O'Dell and Brady Pezold each caught a touchdown pass.

McCauley also played a role on defense, intercepting York quarterback Ryan Brochu.

Halpin set the tone on the ground, scoring on a one-yard run just 59 seconds into the game. Fireworks went off over the home stadium after every Copperheads touchdown. Catawba Ridge led 33-14 at halftime and scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to pull away.

The Copperheads piled up those points despite 10 penalties for 119 yards. York running back Caleb Sanders scored three touchdowns, including a 72-yard run, but the Cougars could not keep pace.

Head coach Zac Lendyak said the bye week before the York game made a difference.

"We put a lot of work in during the bye week. To have two weeks to prepare for a game is a big advantage," Lendyak said. "Pretty much all the stuff we wanted to do we were able to do tonight, which is great to see."

Lendyak had praised Gambrill's development even before the breakout against York. After a 47-22 loss to Indian Land on Sept. 19, the coach said the sophomore quarterback had shown tremendous growth since the season opener.

Now the schedule gets local. Catawba Ridge hosts Nation Ford at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, in a Region 3-4A game. The Falcons enter at 1-6 overall and 1-2 in region play after picking up their first win of the season, a 42-24 victory over Lake Wylie on Oct. 2. Nation Ford quarterback Ben Falkner, making his first start of the season after returning from injury, completed 17 of 20 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns in that game, according to Fort Mill Prep Sports.

"We're excited to see NaFo," Lendyak said. "Any time we get one of the other Fort Mill schools here we expect a big crowd."
