A man who pointed a gun at York County deputies near Clover is in Gaston County Police custody on a fugitive warrant, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said.

The man was shot by deputies on Wednesday, Oct. 14, treated at a hospital and released to the Gaston County Police Department. The fugitive warrant covers charges from both the York County Sheriff's Office and the Clover Police Department, according to a SLED statement reported Saturday, Oct. 17, by YoCo News. SLED did not release the man's name or specify the charges.

The shooting capped a brief chase that began when deputies responded to a home on Lilly Drive in Clover. The man drove off when deputies arrived, according to SLED. After colliding with a deputy's vehicle, he led deputies on a brief pursuit before crashing into a ditch on Lloyd White Road, a few hundred yards from the North Carolina state line.

The man then pointed a firearm at deputies, and two deputies fired, striking him, according to a statement from York County Sheriff Tony Breeden. Aid was rendered after the scene was secured, the sheriff's office said.

Breeden's office said deputies had been assisting Clover Police in locating a suspect with outstanding warrants who had fled from that agency earlier in the morning. The sheriff's office also said it had received information that the suspect had recently made threats of self-harm.

No deputies were physically injured.

The involved deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy, according to Breeden's statement.

SLED called the case an ongoing investigation and said no additional information would be released. The agency said it will interview witnesses, collect evidence and submit a case file to prosecutors.

The Oct. 14 incident is the 33rd officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026, according to SLED. It is the second for the York County Sheriff's Office this year. The office had no officer-involved shootings in 2025.

The Herald reported the shooting was the third by law enforcement in York County in 2026, counting incidents involving other agencies. The 16th Circuit Solicitor's office ruled two earlier shootings justified and in self-defense, The Herald reported, citing documents it obtained.
