Five Tega Cay Lions Club volunteers screened more than 800 students for vision problems at Flint Hill Elementary School on Oct. 19.
The screening was part of the Lions KidSight program, a nationwide effort that provides free eye checks at schools and daycare centers. Volunteers use screening devices to detect refractive errors and vision misalignment, according to the Lions KidSight USA Foundation. Children flagged with potential issues are referred to an eye doctor for a full exam.
The Tega Cay Sun reported that the Oct. 19 event marked milestones for two club members. A newly inducted member identified as Lion Dee participated in her first screening. Lion Amy became a certified KidSight camera operator. Three other volunteers, identified only as Lions Donna, Karl and Mary, also took part.
Lion Karl drew smiles from students by telling them their "eyes are good to go," the Tega Cay Sun reported.
Flint Hill Elementary sits at 392 Gold Hill Road in Fort Mill. The school opened for the 2025-2026 school year, drawing about 800 students previously assigned to Sugar Creek, Springfield and Pleasant Knoll elementary schools, WBTV reported in August 2025. Michelle Gritz serves as principal.
The KidSight program focuses on catching vision problems early. According to the foundation, one in three young children has poor but correctable vision, often needing only eyeglasses. Vision problems left undetected by age 7 can become permanent.
A Tega Cay Lions Club member identified as Christine runs the club's vision screening program in local schools, according to Maisie's Green Brae, a Tega Cay business that lists the Lions Club and KidSight among its 2026 charitable partners. Karl serves as a club officer, the business said.
The River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club, a neighboring chapter, screened more than 14,000 students in its most recent reporting year and identified more than 2,000 who needed further eye exams, according to the club's website. The number of Flint Hill students referred for follow-up after the Oct. 19 screening has not been reported.
The Tega Cay Lions Club has not published a schedule for additional screenings this school year.
