South Carolina residents who haven't registered to vote have until Sunday, Oct. 4, to sign up for the November general election.
In-person registration at county offices closed Friday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m. Online registration, along with fax and email submissions, remains open through Sunday, according to WBTV. Voter registration forms sent by mail must be postmarked by Monday, Oct. 5.
For Fort Mill and Tega Cay residents, the local office is the York County Board of Voter Registration and Elections at 6 South Congress St., Suite 1201, in York. The office can be reached at (803) 684-1242 or [email protected]. Alan Helms serves as director, according to the S.C. Election Commission's website.
How to register online
Online registration requires a South Carolina driver's license or Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) ID card. Residents can register through the S.C. Election Commission's online portal at scvotes.gov.
To register, a person must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old on or before Election Day. The person must also live in South Carolina, in the county and precinct where they are registering.
What to bring on Election Day
Voters must present a photo ID at the polls. Accepted forms include a South Carolina driver's license, DMV ID card, voter registration card with photo, federal military ID, concealed weapons permit or U.S. passport.
No ID means a provisional ballot. That ballot counts only if the voter shows a photo ID to the county elections office before the election is certified. Voters who cannot obtain a photo ID may vote a provisional ballot after signing an affidavit stating they have a reasonable impediment.
What comes next
Residents who miss Sunday's deadline still have one option. Same-day voter registration will be available at early voting centers when in-person early voting begins Monday, Oct. 19.
Early voting runs through Saturday, Oct. 31, with centers open 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, according to WBTV's voter guide. Centers will be closed Sunday, Oct. 25.
The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is Friday, Oct. 23. All completed absentee ballots must be returned by 7 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Voters can check their registration status or view a sample ballot on the S.C. Election Commission's voter information site.
